~ Birch Syrup ~
Birch sap is commonly known for its detoxifying, diuretic, cleansing and purifying properties. Birch Syrup is made from evaporating birch sap, which reduces the water to sugar ratio and starts to caramelize the sugar.
Newfoundland has three types of Birch Trees.
- White Birch (being the most common in NL)
- Yellow Birch
- Mountain White Birch
After locating a sustainable area with a high quantity of mature trees, our team will train and collect sap to produce Birch Syrup.
The sap is collected by drilling a hole in a tree, inserting a spile (spout), and hanging a bucket from the spile. Another method, is alternatively tubing. Which can be used to flow the sap long distances into a large holding tank.
It takes approximately 100 gallons of birch sap to make 1 gallon of Birch Syrup. Also, from these beautiful trees which are found in our provinces forest, you could make Birch Water, Birch Wine and Birch Vodka.
Birch sap contains many vitamins and minerals, listed are just a few: Vitamins A, B6, B12, and C; Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Potassium and Sodium.
A healthy and natural treat for the whole family to enjoy!
